One major diffence between the old and new Standards is the depth to which any given text will be explored. The term being used is "rigor." Students are required to read text rigorously, often several times, while analyzing it for everything from grammar, word choice and sentence structure to content, author's intent, how illustrations are used to add meaning, etc.
Personally, I'm excited about these changes. The new Standards are much more meaningful and relevant to student's lives. Rather than emphasizing spelling skills, parts of speech and the mechanics of writing, the emphasis is on communication, author's intent and reader's interpretation. Instead of choosing the sentence with the correct. punctuation, students will be comparing ideas, forming opinions based on textual evidence, and approaching text with a more critical eye.
