Third Grade Curriculum
Technology
iPads! Yes, we have other technology, but the kids are all about iPads! And they are right. There is not a single passive learner with an iPad in hand. 100% of students are 100% engaged, 100% of the time. Of course, they are not always doing exactly what they are supposed to do, but teachers are vigilant and no one strays for long. If they do, their iPad is taken away! (There are also apps that alert a teacher when a student leaves an app and there are apps that prevent students from leaving.
I could go on and on but in a nutshell: We use the iPads daily, for skills practice (spelling, addition, subtraction, multiplication facts, etc.) researching a topic, using the dictionary or visual thesaurus, looking up answers, finding images, writing stories, playing word games, making movies and slide shows, taking pictures, etc. T
We also have Apple TV in every classroom. We have 12 MacBooks on a cart to check out and use for projects requiring harddrives or things that can't be done on an iPad. We have a computer lab with 30 fabulous iMacs. We use iStation, a program that assess students with computer-adaptive technology. We have iPod touches and Flip cameras.
This really is a fantastic time to be a student. When it comes to technology, we are all students, because it is ever-
changing, fast! There are so many ways to explore the universe and everything in it. There are so many ways to report back what you have learned. There are so many ways to collaborate with other students, from all around the world!
