Teaching is the most rewarding and challenging job there is. Every day is different because every child is different with different cognitive, emotional and social needs. Both the challenges and rewards lie in meeting those needs.
Many factors influence how well a child does in school but the student/teacher relationship is of primary importance. Children who are happy with their teacher work harder and learn more than children who aren't. Because I want my students to be happy and to do their best, I do my best to establish that relationship and to provide them with a safe, inviting environment. At the same time, I let them know that I'm not responsible for their learning. What and how much they learn is entirely their responsibility. They are the ones who will benefit from their learning so they should learn as much as they can.
I tell my students that they should expect to make mistakes while they are learning. Mistakes are a necessary part of the process of learning. EVERYONE makes them! There is no shame in making mistakes, the shame is in not trying. I reward the kids who risk making a mistake in front of the class.
I look forward to coming to work every day because I have such a great class. They are motivated and interesting, and they crack me up. There are a few reluctant readers, a few more reluctant writers and one or two who are not fond of math. Itnting a curriculum.
